Galentine's Day 💞

Having never celebrated Valentine's day with anybody but my cat or my best friend I've never really been bothered about it. I mean, sure it's over commercialized and a complete Hallmark holiday but some of the best times of year are and I've always quite liked the idea of having a day dedicated specifically to your loved one.

However, with Valentines Day, comes that one event where every time I hear the word I can't help but cringe. Galentine's Day. Ack.

Popularised by Parks and Rec the idea is that you spend the day before valentine's day with your gal pals. Sounds good, right? Maybe do a mini 'secret santa' style gift exchange, eat, drink, dance or watch movies. However you want to celebrate your girls day, you do it in style.

Initially I was fairly against Galentine's day. The idea that if you're single you need to be 'distracted' by your equally single girlfriends because being single is ultimately the worst thing you could be? No thank you! When I asked my friends about it very heavily single girls in this group) one person chimed in with "basically it's for losers who are single", which yanno? Not completely wrong.

However a key concept that I initially didn't get because I was too busy cringing over the word - seriously can we please call it anything else - was that actually it's not a bunch of girls moping over being single but instead is taking life by the balls and enjoying it. Ladies, got your whole life ahead of you to get chained to someone who hasn't washed their socks in three weeks, enjoy time with your girls and show some them some lovin'.

What I think is really interesting about Galentine's Day is that ultimately, it’s a fake holiday. The group I spoke to had no idea that it originated from a TV that aired in 2010. Grown from a tv joke is now generating huge amounts of money for businesses. Obviously enough people felt positively towards it that now multiple businesses are selling Galentine's day themed cards, wine glasses, chocolate etc. aswell as the generic Valentine's day ones.

So okay, maybe Galentine's day isn't as bad as I initially thought. Both single and taken girls getting together the day before Valentines to celebrate their love is fun (especially with the new Ariana Grande album drop, just saying 🤷) and even though the word makes me cringe every time I have to give it to my gals. I love you allxox
